She doesn’t believe that after everything she’s been through, she can fall in love.
She’s wrong.
I feel like I should preface this reread review by saying that I still really, really like the story of Mara Dyer. Really.
Why do I feel the need to say that? Well, because there were things that irked me while I was rereading. While I write this review, I’m refraining from looking at my initial review because I’d like to compare the thoughts afterwards. I’m interested to see what the differences are, if there are any.
First things first, I did completely love most of this book. The whole horror part of it was spot-on. The things that Mara sees and can do are terrifying and Michelle Hodkin writes it in such a detailed way that it’s hard to not feel slightly jittery when reading it. I mean, I got quite squirmish and I was reading it for a second time!
BUT while the horror is awesomely done, there were things I didn’t like in the book. I’m not really sure how I felt about Mara when I first read the book, but she’s really not a likeable person. I *want* to like her, but she makes it hard. Also, I felt like Jude was a major asshole and Noah? Where do I begin with Noah? There were times where I loved him, but other times where I felt he was just showing off his money and was just too cocky. There’s also this one part that I thought SCREAMED Twilight. It was bad.
In the end, Michelle Hodkin wrote a killer cliffhanger (one of the main reasons I reread the book, because I forgot what happened) and I can’t wait to get reading the second book in the series now. Maybe Mara will be more likable and maybe Noah will be less Edward-y. We shall see. This book was still perfectly creepy and kept me hooked until the end so, negative things aside, I think I still like it.
