READ-A-LONG: Outlander, by Diana Gabaldon (WEEK TWO UPDATE)

Week Two for the Outlander read-a-long is over! I should plan to read a chapter a day of ALL the books and maybe I’ll catch up and actually finish the series. These are must reads books for me. :)

Here are my answers to this week’s questions:

1.  Claire has been given the task of healer at the castle. She must adapt her nursing skills for the time and learn what herbs and etc will cure each particular ailment that is presented to her. Do you have any home remedies that were passed down to you (cure for a cold, bee sting or what have you)?

Oh gosh, no! I do google a lot of that information, though, because I always like to try a natural way of curing things BEFORE getting medication. The only thing I really do is gargle with salt water when I have a sore throat, or have lots of citrus when I have a cold. I’d love to learn more older methods!

Personally, in Claire’s case, I can’t believe how much she’s adapted to her new surroundings, in terms of her medical care. I wouldn’t have a clue what herbs or plants cured what!

2. What do you think would be the biggest challenge of living in the past? (Clothing, hygiene, food, etiquette or etc.)

This is a hard one! I think I could manage with the clothing and etiquette, but I probably would suffer with the hygiene. I’m not anal about it, but I do like to be clean every day. I don’t think I could go a week (or weeks!) without bathing …

I think it would also be hard to be a woman around men who are drinking, seeing as the men feel like they can have their way with any woman! Scary.

3. Do you have a favorite character, scene or quote so far? If so, share it with us.

My favourite characters are definitely Jamie and Claire! And favourite scene has to be the wedding … and the chapter AFTER the wedding!

4. What did you think about the addition of the blood bond in the wedding ceremony? Is this something you would do with the one you love?

I think it’s a neat thing, though slitting the wrists? Seems a little dangerous! I think the most interesting thing is the defining way to say two people are married is whether or not they’ve consummated the marriage.

5. Are you reading along closely with the scheduled chapters or are you ahead or behind?

I’m just a little after the scheduled chapters … it was hard to stop at chapter 14 this time around. :)

Tune in next week for my answers to the next questions for Chapters 15 – 21 …
See my update from Week One …
