READ-A-LONG: The Graveyard Book, by Neil Gaiman (WEEK THREE UPDATE)

Week Three is now done for the read-a-long for Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book, hosted by the awesome Jenn over at Booksessed. This was a pretty good week for chapters! While I didn’t really get the whole Danse Macabre thing, I loved how the people of the village all wore flowers for the day — like they were remembering their dead.

I also really liked the chapters about Bod going to school! I’m curious how he’s going to leave the graveyard — or if he even does leave the graveyard — in the end, since it seems like he can’t really manage in the real world.

And we get to see Liza again! I’m so glad she was there to help out Bod, especially when that Mo girl was being a little bitch. Kids can be so mean. She totally got what was coming to her.

Here are my answers to this week’s questions:

1. Would you dance the Macarbre?

Possibly? To me, it seemed like a dance to remember the dead, so it seemed like an okay thing. Maybe I just didn’t get it.

2. Why do you think that Silas and the others are so secretive about it?

Probably because Bod feels like one in their family, but really he’s a world apart being one of the living. When he danced, it was with the living and they probably didn’t want to remind him that he’s not a part of their world.

3. Why do you think the flowers haven’t bloomed in decades?

Maybe it has something to do with Bod and Jack? I’m really not sure about this one!

4. Who do you think the men were with the Man Jack?

His posse? Fellow assassin guys. Groupies?

5. Why do you think he’s running out of time?

I’m so curious about this! I mean, obviously he was supposed to kill Bod when he was at the house. Maybe Bod has special powers or knows something about Jack (which just seems ridiculous because he was a BABY) and that’s why they need to kill him? The silly thing is that I’ve read this before and I have NO CLUE.

6. What do you think of Bod’s being in school? His classmates? The “arrest”?

I loved Bod being in school, especially how everyone seems to know him, but no one seems to remember him. Mo and Nick were the bulliest of bullies and I’m so glad that Bod avenged Mo. She deserved it. I mean, who tells their uncle, the policeman, to arrest a kid just to scare him? SHE was the one being the total brat in school!

This is one of the reasons why I’m curious about how Bod will survive in the real world — I mean, he spends a few days in school and gets arrested? What’s going to happen when he leaves the graveyard?

7. What are your thoughts on Silas’ rescue?

Dramatic, but necessary. What would Bod have said if the cops took him in and asked about his parents? Uh, “THEY LIVE IN A GRAVEYARD?” I don’t think that would’ve gone over so well.

8. Do you think that there is a connection between Silas and the Man Jack?

I really don’t think so. I think Silas is there to protect Bod and that’s that. Well, and I agree with Sarah that he’s a vampire. But I don’t think he’s in cahoots with the Man Jack at all.

Stay tuned next week for my fourth and final update!
