When I think back, the Twilight series was the series that got me back into reading. I had always been a reader, but only a book here and there, never as voraciously as I ever thought I would be. So, when I decided I would tackle rereading more books, I knew that I had to give Twilight another go.
Truthfully, when I first read this book, I reread it a few times immediately after. This was about 4 years ago and I remember being completely in love with it. I had hoped that these feelings would remain today.
Unfortunately, this was not the case. I like rereading books, but a book like this, that seemed to come out on the cusp of the YA explosion could either be a hit or a miss. Since it was published in 2008, authors have gotten more daring — they’ve written books on a variety of topics and with such great imaginations that this story seems weak in comparison. I do appreciate Stephenie Meyer’s mind and how she came up with some of the ideas, but I’m betting I could’ve skipped a reread on this one.
For me, this was a boring read. It took me forever to really get through it and at the halfway mark I really wanted it to end. Sure, I could’ve just put it down and stopped reading since I’ve read it a few times already AND have seen the movie, so I knew how it ended, but I was determined. I wondered what happened to the story that I loved so much.
Bella was kind of annoying throughout the story — and SO accident prone. I mean, if someone is tripping and falling all the time and can barely walk in a straight line without doing so, there’s a problem. I also didn’t really like the relationship between her and Edward. I feel like the movie romanticized it more — in the book, Edward just seems like a jerk with his vague “I like you but we can’t be together.”
The dialogue wasn’t sharp like it is in books these days. It felt forced in some sections and just awkward in others. Maybe I had left a reread too long, or maybe I had just watched the movie too many times, but there wasn’t a lot that really sat well with me when I read the book.
I had hoped to continue on with this series as a full series reread, but honestly I just don’t think I can take it.
